Holiday Cheer without Holiday Calories

The holidays can be tough. I think most of us put on a few pounds, despite our best efforts. How can you minimize the damage when going out for holiday drinks or at a holiday cocktail party? Try these alternatives....

Instead of egg nog, the delicious but super caloric beverage, try hot mulled apple cider. You can keep it warm at parties by using a crock pot. Add whole cinnamon sticks and cloves.

Instead of that pumpkin spice latte, try a cup of coffee seasoned with pumpkin spice and topped with a dollop of fat free cool whip.

Instead of a Bloody Mary at brunch, try a glass of V-8 with a squeeze of lemon.

Be creative - substitute diet soda or tonic for caloric soda or juice as a mixer. Use juice as a flavoring - add a splash of cranberry or pineapple to a drink. Avoid calorie bombs like margaritas and pina coladas. Opt for wine instead. Consider serving hot mulled wine at your next holiday party. Always keep sparkling water on hand at parties.

Another non-alcoholic, yet festive, idea is to place several frozen berries (raspberries, strawberries or blueberries) at the bottom of champagne glasses and then add sparkling water or diet ginger ale, and you have a beautiful and exotic looking drink.

By making a few good choices you can shave off lots of unnecessary calories and still fill your holidays with cheer!
