Foodie Review: Gardenburger Riblets

I don’t know how they do it. I really don’t. Although not a particularly “fit” food, I must confess that I’ve been obsessed with BBQ ribs for years. I’ve tried them from everywhere -- chain restaurants like Outback to hole-in-the-wall dives. Never would I have imagined that anyone could create a respectable vegetarian version of ribs (albeit boneless), but Gardenburger has done it.

The Riblets come in two pouches and can easily be made in the microwave or by boiling the pouches in a pot of water on the stove. The whole prep time takes less than ten minutes. Each Riblet is about six inches long and shaped to resemble ribs. Obviously, they are boneless.  The BBQ sauce is quite good (it could stand to have a little extra even). The texture is remarkably meat-like. The Riblets have a smoky flavor very close to the real thing.

Whether you are a vegetarian or not these Riblets are worth a try. With simple preparation, and far less calories and fat than the real thing it would be crazy NOT to keep a few boxes in your freezer.

Serving suggestions: Pair the riblets with some corn on the cob and rice, or baked or mashed potatoes. Start your meal with a green salad, and you’ve got a great BBQ dinner without all the calories and fat.
